Good morning, everyone!
So, you want to be a writer? I have great news: you can be a writer! I absolutely believe that if this is what you want, then you are capable.
The Struggle of Starting
The problem for many people who refuse to start or who begin and stop can be summed up easily. Motivation is temporary, and inspiration is fleeting.
In fact, studies have shown that more than talent, motivation, intelligence, or inspiration, grit is required to succeed. Grit is not an acronym for anything. It is a real-life determiner of success. Individuals with high levels of grit are more likely to persevere than those without.
While the dictionary defines grit as “courage and resolve; strength of character,” for a writer, it simply means that you never completely give up.
My Journey As a Writer
I started writing the series The Last Great Dragon War when I was just 18 years old. After drafting my first ten manuscripts, my life became complicated.
I began dating a girl who lived an hour away. We fell in love, but I lost my focus and drive to complete the series. She received a job offer that moved her from one hour to three and a half hours away. We tried everything we could to make it work.
However, when our relationship fell apart after five years of fighting for one another, I was devastated. Everything creative in me died... or so I thought.
Finding New Inspiration
When my wife and I started dating in 2019, she introduced me to my current writing mentor. His encouragement catapulted me back into the creative space. As soon as I resumed writing, I tapped into the grit I knew from the past. With a new breath of life, I published my first book in the Last Great Dragon War series, Tournament of Kings, in January 2024.
By June 2024, I had published two more books: Death & the Dragon Lord and the prequel Wolf of War. In February 2025, I released the third book, Calderon's War. The fourth book, Haunted Paths, released June 1st, 2025.
The Role of Grit in Writing Success
No matter what your writing process may be, add grit, and you will ultimately publish your works. It is important for aspiring writers to understand that perseverance is key. The road may be long, and the obstacles may seem insurmountable, but with determination and dedication, success is within reach.
How to Cultivate Grit
Set Clear Goals: Define what you want to achieve in your writing journey. This clarity will help guide your actions and keep you motivated.
Develop a Routine: Establishing a consistent writing schedule can keep you accountable and make writing a habit.
Embrace Failure: Understand that setbacks are part of the writing process. Instead of being discouraged, use them as learning experiences.
Seek Support: Surround yourself with other writers and mentors who can offer encouragement and feedback. This community can be invaluable.
Stay Committed: Remind yourself why you started writing in the first place. Keeping your passion at the forefront will help you stay committed.
Final Thoughts
In conclusion, becoming a writer requires more than just talent or inspiration. It requires grit. With perseverance and commitment, you can overcome challenges and achieve your writing goals. So, embrace your journey. Write, revise, and never lose sight of your dreams!
Whatever your process is, add grit to the mix, and you will find success in your writing endeavors.
